A rootin' tootin' city girl

Hello Darlings,

So the county themed party last night he-hawed with county star curls and cowboys tipping hats to  beer sipping prairie girls.

Becideds the music, the whole night ended up being quite enjoyable. I ended up trying on many different outfits for the rootin tootin occasion, but found myself in a little country dress that i got at a thrift store in Carbondale  Illinois. I tied the outfit together with a hot pink bandanna, hounds-tooth socks, peasant loafers, a long necklace and pigtails. I think the look worked...at least i hope it did.

To continue the he-haw theme of this weekend, i ended up going witha couple of my lady friends to the LA County Fair today.

It was so funny. I felt the youth awakeining glee that only fresh squeezed lemonade, friend zucchini, live horse races, and peeting zoos can provide a city girl like me.  I was whisked back to memories of  going to the Small fairs in Illinois, of eating funnel cake with my dad, and riding the incredibly unsafe rides designed to make children both cry and scream.

It was a beautiful, hot, crowded, blast from the past. and to top it all off I actually won a goldfish. Yep a Real live goldfish. I have named him Gold Fishington.

He managed to live  as i walked through the 90 degree heat, which makes me think he is a winner. When we got home, I moved him from the small cup of dirty water the carny provided me, into a bigger small bowl with some blue gravel that was left over from the untimely death of my former Beta Fish, Slim Fishington. I think he is a good fish, and will fit in nicely with the cat, dog, and husband in the Tessa Face zoo.

Well, tomorrow starts my " hit the ground running day" and will also begin a series of blog entries which i am going to call the "funemployment diaries." catchy huh?

Summer Lovin' Had me a Blast Off

What a summer it has been.

In fact this summer was really exactly what I needed. It was time to fly, to brush off the horrible after affects of staying too long at a job I had out grown. So I went back. Back to basics.  Decided to trade my skinny leg jeans, boots, and black eyeliner for a summer in the sun. I have always liked working with children and although my goal is to find a job in the film and tv industry, children somehow always mange to bring me back down to earth and remind me to laugh.

I got a job this summer working at the kids surfing camp Fitness by the sea.  It truly was a magical experience. I lost 15 pounds, drank more than my share of beer at  this cute little Tex Mex place on the pch, and made a bunch of beach friends. We were a rag-tag group of teachers, actors, students, nannys, industry people, and weirdos all brought together for three months away from the real world, and into a world of red and blue shirts, sunburn, and silliness.

I tried to think of it as a restart button, setting all my controls back to neutral as I chose my next path.

It happens to be really hard when you are 27 and still trying to decide what you want to be when you grow up.

I'm lucky if you think about it...I mean  Ihad the chance to explore a few options along the way...

Like this summer in addition to playing in the waves I worked as a PA of the ABC show "Take The Money and Run",  as a model for esalon.com, and as a make-up artist  and photographer on singer Michelle Shapow's Back Down to Earth Music Video.  My photo gallery from that shoot can be found here: Prodcution stills.

So in all truth, im sure ill be fine. But for now, I'm one week back into what I jokingly refer to as "funemployment." haha.  I have been keeping myself busy with the normal stuff people do to feel better about themselves:  cleaning the apartment,  learning to be a better cook, working out at what literally must be the worst gym in the world, and playing with my new dog. The  dog ( Fitzgerald Doggington Parkhurst) is pretty sweet. And you know what? life is pretty sweet too.

So, I figure Monday will be the day to start it all. To sit down, make a schedule, fine-tune that resume, hit up all those contacts, and find an extra special job.

But...as for now, It's Saturday night and im going to a party!  The party tonight is in West Hollywood, and is country themed. I think i'll wear jean shorts, pigtails with ribbons, and boots. im excited. I just can't stay away from nightlife. I love the LA scene to pieces.

Gold Panda, Beatnik Jr, and Kenneth Nahokulani Designs

a weekend full of friends, fashion, and music started on a rainy Thursday afternoon. I was late as usual, laying in my bed taking pictures out windows and thinking about words.

The rain washed away the event i was scheduled to model at on thursday night, but the beautiful and talented jewelery designer Kenneth Nahokulani, who i affectionately call "kenny" sent me a last min txt, telling me to come for dress rehearsal and red wine. i never say no to wine or dress up. who can?

...
friday i joined up with a crew i like to call " the casa boys," because they all live in my building, the casa, the melrose place of the modern age. We drank some wine and ventured out to the mint on pico in west la. the mint was having some indie hip-hop vs. indie rock battle. the black crystal wolf kids played, and covered lcd soundsystem and mgmt. i'd heard them before somewhere, perhaps playing a show with my friends in the band wires in the walls. it really is small small world of music and bands.
...
when i think of Saturday, the word that come to mind is "grateful." I got to to see my wonderful friend's band beatnik jr. play at the boogie den in downtown la. the boggie den is one of those "you have to know about it and not be scared of east la to find it" type of places. parking there, between two tagged trees in a dirty ally was halarious and beautiful, kind of like everyone at the show.the grittyness of it all it might have scared my adorable girl friends, but made me smile. i love dirty, dancy, indie la. one inside my eyes filled with familiar faces, sounds and smells. the band tuning up, the pretty girls picking through the vintage clothes that where for sale by the pound, the smell of pbr spilling out of silly hands. its felt like home...

...

then, as only the truly ambitious, will do, i decided to go out again on sunday night to check out a gold panda set at the trubador. i needed to dance myself clean.

that's all of now...i gotta get up early and go work on a music video tomorrow.

Beatnik Jr. at the 3 Clubs Hollywood

Going out tonight to see the band pictured above, Beatnik Jr, play at a really cool place in downtown LA called the boogie den. I heard they have vintage clothes for sale there by the pound. how can I resist? the pictures above are from the last beatnik show, at a little sopt in hollywood called the 3 clubs. Always another rock show...i love you LA.

...

Now...what should i wear tonight? last night i decided to go witha grey dress, 80's style tights and my black "combat boots." I love those boots.they remind me to be free. im off to dance myself clean with the other pretty things.
